
Standing at the front for the band Robin and Looza in the past and Robin and The New Revolution in the present, Robin Tamang, connotatively can be taken as a magnet that has magnetised hugest crowd of Nepali rock fanatics towards the music that both the bands have produced since its commencement till the present subsistence. His showmanship, headship, communication with crowd in concerts, attitude and altitude that he posses, reflect the image of true rock star. Robin Tamang has earned his identification as composer, lyricist, producer, songwriter, restaurateur and musician. He is also known to be the judge for Sprite Band Challenge, Freedom to Rock, Season I, II, III becoming one of the individuals to hold the panel with full of zip.
Born in Singapore on 17th April 1963, Robin Tamang was schooled at Alexander School, Singapore that continued in St George, Hong Kong and then achieved Mechanical Engineering from Humber College, Toronto. Robin’s love from music started from his family as the youngest to 2 elder brothers and 2 elder sisters. Robin used to play music with his brothers and also got inspired for becoming a rock star. He teamed with some members for his high school band called F Troop seeing the beginning of his involvement in other bands in his future days.
Robin worked as a manager for Club Z bar and later opened a nightclub called Still Life two years later. Following that, he owned other nightclubs, Scorpio and Killing Time. At the age of 18, Robin was jailed for shoplifting, as a result of his hanging around with bad friends circles. ‘Nobody can oppose to what friends suggest: Robin’.
Robin came to Nepal in 19996 and involved in Prerana, a NGO. This was the time when Robin thought of doing something in music and planned of creating a venue for young musicians and came up with Bamboos, Thamel.
Robin meet Looza in Pokhara where the band jammed for few days and also appeared in the bars for two years before forming the band Robin and Looza. After two years, the band was formed Robin and Looza and also released their debut album Nepal. The album received good acclaim with the songs like Nepal and tribute to Danny Denzongpa’s greatest hit Chiso Hawama and Arun Thapa’s Jati Maya Laye Pani. The band released their second and third album, Adhunikko Aganma and Bhool Ma Bhoolyo in 2001 and 2003 respectively. The band grabbed the Hits FM Award for Best Song in Foreign Language in 2003 and Rara Music Award for Best Live Act Performance in 2004.
The disbandment of the band ‘Robin and Looza’ in 2004 came up with another band Robin and The New Revolution comprising of new line up, Rajesh on drums, Dipesh on Guitars and Prabin on Bass. ‘I need to experience as much music as I can and work with many people as possible: Robin’. The band released the debut Keta Keti and was a big hit following which the band released another album Terha Hazzar. ‘The album is dedicated to 13000 people who lost their lives during the political insurgency of Nepal: Robin’.
In 2009, during a concert in Sikkim, Robin was put to take a cave rest at his home due to a fracture on his leg. It happened right after the band was returning to their hotel after having dinner. As it was late night the entrance gate was closed and all of them had to jump the gate thinking that it would not be a quality of a civilized human being to disturb the hotel associates at such hours. All the members had a safe landing except Robin Tamang where he had to be taken to a nearby hospital and had to implant steel on the leg.
Robin and The New Revolution released another album Hamro Desh in August 2011. Mukti Shakya, front man of Mukti and the Revival, Nicole Thakuri-Wick, director of NAG, and Ashesh K Sharma of Mu’az Entertainment Pvt. Ltd jointly launched the album on August 13 at Attic, Utter Dhoka. The band decided to donate all the money from the sales of the album to Nawa Asha Griha, a NGO working for orphans having 640 kids. The title song Hamro Desh is written by Dr Krishna Hari Baral and is about encouraging youth of the country to move ahead despite of turmoil in the country. The album is also about the education and kids and making the society better place for living.
Currently, the band Robin and The New Revolution completes with Robin on vocals and guitars, Dipesh Singh on guitars, Shyan Karajan on bass and Sanam Shrestha on drums.
